Five decades of success: SCHILLER's journey

Innovative Swiss Medtech Worldwide

For 50 years, SCHILLER has been committed to the fight against sudden cardiac death. The success story began with the launch of a handy emergency electrocardioscope. In one stroke, the company not only made a name for itself, but also set new standards.

Discover more about our rich history and the key events that have defined our path to excellence.

SCHILLER was founded in 1974 by Alfred E. Schiller. Starting in a four-room flat as a one-man business, the company has become a successful group with about 1400 employees, 31 subsidiaries and a global sales network. Today, SCHILLER is a world-leading manufacturer and supplier of devices for cardiopulmonary diagnostics, rescue and patient monitoring as well as software solutions for the medical industry.

For 50 years, SCHILLER has been committed to the fight against sudden cardiac death. The success story began with the launch of a handy emergency electrocardioscope. In one stroke, the company not only made a name for itself, but also set new standards. Thanks to suitable therapies and rehabilitation measures, physicians can thus protect people of all age groups from sudden cardiac death.

As success grew, so did the product portfolio: devices such as blood pressure monitors and spirometers enhanced the range, and complete diagnostic stations and monitoring devices started being produced for clinics and medical practices. Similarly, the production sites and competence centres also expanded. In addition to the headquarters in Baar (Switzerland), a competence centre was established in Wissembourg (France), specialising in the fields of defibrillation and monitoring.

Another competence centre opened in Graz (Austria): The company medilog became part of the SCHILLER Group. This new alliance allowed SCHILLER to acquire additional know-how in the field of high-end long-term ECG. The next major step was achieved through the alliance with GANSHORN, a company specialising in the field of pulmonary function diagnostics, which is now also a part of the SCHILLER Group.

1974

The founding of SCHILLER AG

SCHILLER AG was founded in 1974 by the physicist Alfred E. Schiller. It began as an engineering company with offices near Zurich in Switzerland.

The first product developed by SCHILLER was the MINISCOPE MS-1, a lightweight portable emergency ECG device. This was a significant innovation at a time when ECG devices were large and bulky and therefore mostly stationary.

The MINISCOPE revolutionised the ECG market in 1974 and paved the way for SCHILLER’s continued success story.

1974

MINISCOPE MS-1 led the way

Alfred Schiller was ready. The physicist succeeded in producing an ultrasmall, ultralight ECG device in 1974. The MINISCOPE MS-1 was to be the beginning of an incredible company history.

Alfred Schiller built the first MINISCOPE MS-1 at home on his kitchen table. Once he showed the completed device to a doctor, word of the small, lightweight, portable ECG device spread like wildfire. 250 units were ordered within a very short time. Customers paid half the price in advance with delivery within six months. Everyone agreed to this. Alfred Schiller was thus able to procure the components and manufacture the MINISCOPE MS-1.

Soon afterwards, Alfred Schiller even built a printer into the small housing. The MINIGRAPH MG-1 came onto the market.

SCHILLER sold 5000 units of the MINISCOPE MS-1 and a total of 12,000 units of the MINIGRAPH MG-1 and its successor, the MINIGRAPH MG-1A.

Alfred Schiller saw the potential of small and handy medical devices. This motivated him to devote himself to analyzing lungs as well as hearts. The Minispirometer SP-1A, which was available from 1978, also laid the foundation in this area.

The company had long since outgrown its initial domestic production site and in 1979 Alfred Schiller and his already numerous employees moved into his new three-storey company building in Baar, the current location of the SCHILLER’s headquarters.

1979

SCHILLER AG moves into newly built headquarters

Due to its great success, SCHILLER needs larger office and production space and therefore moves to a new building in Baar, near the city of Zug, in 1979.

In 1986, SCHILLER AG expands and adds a second building to its headquarters.

Two more buildings were constructed in 2000 and 2011.

Today, around 180 employees work at the SCHILLER headquarters in Baar.

1983

The first subsidiary

In 1983, SCHILLER-Reomed is founded as a sales and service organization in Dietikon, Switzerland.

In December 2018, the company moves to the newly renovated SCHILLER offices in Obfelden, Switzerland. SCHILLER-Reomed will not remain the only subsidiary for long, as further branches will soon be added.

In 2023, SCHILLER-Reomed is renamed SCHILLER Switzerland.

Visión

50 years SCHILLER – an overview

50 years SCHILLER, that means 50 years of competence and innovation in medical technology. The best research and development engineers, the locational advantage of our Swiss headquarters, our many years of experience and our thirst for knowledge, our pioneer spirit and the expertise of leading scientists and users have made SCHILLER so successful.

From a one-man business in a four-room apartment in 1974, SCHILLER has grown into a successful group with around 1,400 employees, 30 subsidiaries and a global sales network. It all started with the small and portable emergency ECG device MINISCOPE MS-1. Shortly after, SCHILLER became the first ECG manufacturer to integrate an interpretation program directly into an ECG device. SCHILLER built on this extraordinary achievement and developed into a globally renowned brand and reference in the ECG sector at an early stage of the company’s history.

Despite the company’s continuous growth, size is not as important to SCHILLER as strength. SCHILLER relies on a motivated team, creativity, openness to new ideas and pioneering courage. “The Art of Diagnostics” inspires us to constantly look ahead and further develop our portfolio.

Today, in 2024, SCHILLER is a leading global manufacturer and supplier of devices for cardiopulmonary diagnostics, defibrillation, and patient monitoring as well as software solutions for the medical sector.

1984

The world's first ECG device capable of interpretation

CARDIOVIT CS-6 was the first device in the world that could automatically measure and interpret ECGs.

And within the record time of only five seconds. During this time there were mainframe computers which needed three minutes for the same result. The CARDIOVIT CS-6 device was such a revolution that SCHILLER AG could hardly keep up with production.

1986

Subsidiary Germany

Here comes the next milestone in SCHILLER’s company history: SCHILLER Medizintechnik GmbH is founded in Ottobrunn near Munich in 1986.

Today, the company has a large sales, service and distribution network in Germany with 11 offices throughout the country.

In 2012, the company moved to Feldkirchen near Munich and now also includes the pneumology division GANSHORN.

1988

The first subsidiary outside Europe

SCHILLER
Originally venturing into America in 1988, SCHILLER established SCHILLER Americas Inc. in Newport Beach, CA, as its first subsidiary outside of Europe.

SCHILLER Americas swiftly became the leading headquarters for cardiopulmonary technology across the USA. This regionalized approach enables our subsidiary to maintain a vast inventory, readily available for immediate delivery across the regions they serve, thus minimizing downtime for clinicians.

Today, SCHILLER Americas is headquartered in Miami, Florida, overseeing all sales and dealerships throughout Canada, the United States, the Caribbean, Mexico, and Latin America, providing top-tier solutions to these regions.

1989

ECG and spirometry combined for the first time

In 1989, SCHILLER combines the 6-channel ECG device AT-6 and spirometry function in one device.

This is another pioneering achievement by the innovative Swiss medical technology company. It develops and markets the new spirometry sensor SPIROVIT SP-100.

1989

SCHILLER enters the Eastern European Market

SCHILLER Austria is founded in 1989. A large market share, technical and digital achievements as well as a network to Eastern Europe made SCHILLER strong via Austria to Poland, into the Ukraine, to Romania and North Macedonia.

SCHILLER Austria is founded in 1989. A large market share, technical and digital achievements as well as a network to Eastern Europe made SCHILLER strong via Austria to Poland, into the Ukraine, to Romania and North Macedonia.

He was one of the four founders in 1989 and Christian Ecker is still CEO of SCHILLER Austria today. At that time, he had already been working for the Tatschl company, which sold SCHILLER devices in Austria, for several years. He therefore already knew the market. In the spring of 1989, things really got going with the founding of SCHILLER Austria and an inauguration party.

Bestsellers yesterday and today

“Our bestsellers back then were the AT-6, as ECG device with spirometry and the AT-3 with its diagnostic software,” recalls Christian Ecker. “Some of these devices are still on the market with enthusiasts who use the latest SCHILLER products in their practices and clinics, but who simply value these long-lasting initial products too much to put them aside,” says Christian Ecker. Through digitalization, thermal printers and LCD displays, SCHILLER has turned the Austrian market upside down. The market share in the ECG sector in Austria is consistently around 60%. Today, the CARDIOVIT FT-1, AT-102 G2 and CS-104 are at the top of the popularity rankings.

From Austria to Eastern Europe

SCHILLER developed the Eastern European market from Austria. In the early 1990s, subsidiaries were established in Hungary, Poland, Croatia, Slovenia, Serbia, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and in the Ukraine, as well as in various Balkan states. “We established branches, sales offices or subsidiaries depending on the legal possibilities,” Christian Ecker recounts of the expansion.

1992

BR-102: small, light, quiet, powerful

This is also SCHILLER: In 1992, the revolutionary BR-102 blood pressure monitor was introduced to the market as a new lightweight device.

The BR-102 provided reliable data, had an LCD display and an alphanumeric keypad with direct functions and was a standalone unit. It could be used anywhere but could also be connected to a printer or PC.

An excerpt from the advertising of the time gives an idea of what a technical achievement the SCHILLER BR-102 was.

1995

The bestseller CARDIOVIT AT-1 is introduced

CARDIOVIT AT-1, the durable 3-channel resting ECG with 12 simultaneous leads, was sold over 100,000 times worldwide.

Thanks to its compact format and light weight, it could be used almost anywhere. With an integrated printer and a battery life of two hours, it was the ideal companion for home visits and the perfect introduction into professional electrocardiography.
